Three of these four offers have a clearly positive expected value. Across the fifteen casino welcome bonuses we track, only two do.
The explanation is in the economics. A casino makes its money from the house edge on every spin, so a 40x wagering requirement is not really an obstacle it wants you to clear — the bonus is an acquisition cost it expects to recover through the turnover itself. A sportsbook makes its money from the overround on the bets you place, so a 5x requirement at a minimum price of 1.80 still produces the volume it needs, and it can afford to let you clear it.
The exception on this page proves the rule. Gunsbet’s 285% to €7,500 at 40x is a casino bonus wearing a sportsbook’s jersey, and it prices like one: NZ$8,000 of turnover on a NZ$200 claim, at an expected cost of roughly NZ$400. The headline is the biggest on the page and the value is the worst.
The two conditions to check on any free bet
- The minimum odds. 1.80 or 2.00 on these offers. It exists to stop you clearing the requirement on odds-on shots with almost no variance, and it is the condition that makes the offer work for the book.
- Whether the stake is returned. A NZ$100 free bet at 3.00 that returns NZ$200 (winnings only) is worth considerably less than one returning NZ$300 (stake plus winnings). Almost all free bets are stake-not-returned; the offers here are matched deposits rather than pure free bets, which is better.

Gunsbet — the veteran with the big number
Trading since 2016, which makes it the longest-running brand on this site and is a genuine signal in a market where skins appear and vanish. European football and tennis are priced properly at around 103.5%.
Weak on: no cryptocurrency at all, euro-denominated, a €4,000 weekly cap that is the lowest here, and a 40x welcome offer that is the worst value on the page.
Ivibet Sportsbook — the niche markets
Prices the ANZ Premiership, Silver Ferns, Super Smash and other New Zealand markets that most offshore books ignore entirely. If you follow netball and want a bet on it, this is close to the only offshore option.
Weak on: the price of those niche markets — 110–112% overround, wide by any standard. A second account for specific markets, not a main book.

Why are the sportsbook welcome offers so much better than casino bonuses?
Because the economics are different. A casino’s margin is the house edge on every spin, so it can afford to set a 40x requirement it knows almost nobody will clear — the bonus is an acquisition cost it mostly recovers. A sportsbook’s margin is the overround on the bets you actually place, so a 5x or 6x requirement at a minimum price still generates the turnover it needs. The result is that three of the four offers on this page have a positive expected value, which is true of only two of the fifteen casino offers we track.
Can I bet in New Zealand dollars?

What is in-play betting and which book does it best?
Betting on a match while it is in progress, with prices updating continuously. Bet&Play is the best of these four, and the reason is suspension time: on a Premier League fixture we tracked, its next-goal market was suspended for about four minutes across ninety, against over twelve minutes at two rivals. Every minute of suspension is a minute you cannot bet, and it usually falls exactly when the price is moving.
Do these sportsbooks cover New Zealand sport?
Patchily, and it is the honest weakness of all of them. All Blacks tests and Super Rugby are priced competitively because they are globally traded. The NPC is priced at a wider margin than TAB NZ. The Heartland Championship is mostly not priced at all. Netball is quoted only by Ivibet, at 110–112%. For New Zealand domestic sport, TAB NZ is generally the better bet on price as well as being the lawful one.
