Alison is a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors NZ. Alison is the CEO and co-founder at edenfx HSE Recruitment and Hard Hat Recruitment Ltd bringing 25+ years' senior management experience to a challenging and highly competitive technical environment.
Alison's background is as a Chartered Health and Safety Director (UK) and she is a Certified Member of NZ Institute of Safety Management, Registered Safety Professional (ANZ), Member of the Institute of Directors and Member of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand.
Her entrepreneurial spirit and deep commitment to supporting the youth of New Zealand to "be the best that they can be" is a natural alignment for Alison on the NZCGE board.
Alison has a particular interest in Corporate Social Responsibility whereby organisations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment.
Barry Akers is a self-employed consultant with a varied background in communications and corporate affairs management. He is a Director of financial and corporate public relations firm Senescall Akers, which works with clients across a broad front of sectors, organisations, projects and issues.
Barry migrated to New Zealand from Australia in 1986, becoming Public Affairs Manager of the New Zealand Stock Exchange and later Corporate Affairs Manager of Fletcher Challenge. He co-founded Senescall Akers in 2001. From 2010 to 2014 he was seconded as a member of the senior management team for the residential repair programme following the Canterbury earthquakes.
Barry was a member of the Board of Trustees for a state integrated area school in Auckland, serving as Chairman for four years.
His early career was in journalism, as a business writer and editor in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
His involvement with the New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education is founded on support for the right of children with special educational needs to be assisted to reach their potential. “Gifted children present both need and opportunity. Specialist services are vital to their development and fulfilment; and, in turn, they have the capacity to make a special contribution to the communities they live in.”
Don’s career has been focused in the primary sector, with him being a Registered Forestry Consultant, Operations Manager for a number of high-profile biosecurity eradication programmes and involved in the dairy sector. Don is self-employed, a member of several Boards and a member of the Institute of Directors.
Don brings a wealth of knowledge in the education sector. He has been Chair of a School Board of Trustees; a member of a Research Board based at Lincoln University and has taught at a tertiary level. Having 4 children that have also a benefited from attending gifted education and seeing the results has motivated a desire to see this work recognised and extended for the impact it can have on individual children, their families and our communities. These are often our future leaders and failing to invest in them is a failure to invest in our future society.
Don has been fortunate to travel extensively and see education in other parts of the world where it is not a right in the same way as we have here in New Zealand. Recognising the fortunate position, we are in, here in New Zealand, we need to ensure the potential of all children is optimised.
Don’s wide experience across multiple sectors provides diversity of skills in terms of strategy, implementation, delivery and meeting challenges and understanding the opportunities these can create.
Tim has a wide background and skill set driven by the values of making a real difference, whilst inspiring and influencing those around him. He has strong financial and strategy design and execution experience as well as governance and leadership roles. Tim is a partner in M3 Group, a boutique corporate advisory firm focused on ensuring clients have adequate capital resources but also the strategy, culture, systems and processes to deliver value.
He has industry experience from engineering, energy industry, as well as extensive exposure to capital markets. Tim has had extensive C-level public company and non-executive positions and has led and advised a number of strategic implementation programmes.
Tim completed a Master in Business Administration from the University of Bradford, a Bachelor in Offshore (Civil) Engineering (Hons) from Heriot University and various certificates and postgraduate certificates in strategic Leadership and Management.
Anne is a highly respected Not-for-Profit leader. She has headed several of Aotearoa New Zealand’s high-profile cultural such as the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, educational organisations such as Cognition Education Trust (formerly Multi-Serve), has consulted to local government and charities, lectured in arts industry management and served on granting committees, government and Not-for-Profit boards.
She has delivered some of New Zealand’s iconic programmes and events including the Michael Hill International Violin Competition since 2001, the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival and the 2020 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards. Anne is the founder and director of Voyager Advisory, a consultancy and capability-building service for New Zealand’s arts and creative industry professionals.
Anne is the co-author of Tomorrow’s Board Diversity: The Role of Creatives and her recent consulting projects have been with the Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand, global firm AEA Consulting for Regional Facilities Auckland and JBWere Philanthropic Services for Sport NZ Group.
Anthony Appleton - TattersallTreasurerAuckland
Anthony comes from a finance background, being a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Auckland University and an MBA from the Australian Institute of Business.
He has been involved with NZCGE board since 2017 and presently serves as Treasurer. Other governance experience includes previously terms with the council of Dietitians NZ, and the Monarch Butterfly New Zealand Trust.
Raised in Auckland, and having held a variety of financial and analytical roles throughout Auckland and London, Anthony's time is now split between running AAT Accounting Services, a public practice accounting firm, and spending time with his young family. His son Arthur began attending Small Poppies classes soon after his second birthday.
Anthony has a strong interest in the educational sector, especially areas outside of the mainstream. He was identified as gifted during his years in secondary school, so understands some of the challenges and opportunities this brings. Accordingly, he has a personal affinity for the NZCGE cause - and high interest in seeing extra support for gifted learners to best influence the future of our country and planet.
